This final portfolio is a collection of what I have accomplished during my time in this class. I have been able
to experience through practice and firsthand experience what teaching in an elementary science classroom will be like.
I have come to understand the undervalued importance of science education and begun to learn how to overcome the common
mistake of overlooking science in elementary classrooms. This class has provided me with great resources I can use to
improve science education in my future classroom, as well as the practice necessary to appreciate the diverse experiences
that come with teaching science. I have learned to be prepared for anything from labs not working or taking too
long to being prepared for questions that reach beyond the curriculum I have planned.
In the education resource center at Riveredge Nature Center, where I went on my field trrip, there was a banner that
really caught my attention. The banner (pictured above) reads, "Tug on anything at all and you will find it is connected
to everything else". This statement rang so true for me, especially in regards to science education. Science is
an endless series of connections, and it is science that connects us to the rest of the world. Additionally, since science
is an often overlooked or misunderstood subject in elementary education, it is important to show students how science is connected
to the other subjects through cross-curriculum activities.
